Hair & Scalp Changes During Menopause: What You Need to Know

Have you noticed more hair in your brush, a wider parting, or a scalp that suddenly feels dry or sensitive? We often talk about how our skin changes during perimenopause and menopause, but our hair and scalp can change too. It is a common concern, and one worth understanding rather than simply putting it down to age.

How does menopause affect our hair?

Oestrogen fluctuates during perimenopause and remains lower after menopause. These hormonal changes can influence the normal hair-growth cycle. Some women notice finer hair, increased shedding, or less volume, particularly around the parting or crown. Genetics and the relative influence of androgens can also play a part.

The scalp is skin, too. Changes in skin hydration, together with haircare habits or underlying scalp conditions, may leave it feeling tight, flaky, itchy, or more sensitive. Not every change is hormonal, however.

What else could be contributing?

Before we put the blame squarely on Menopause, stress, illness, some medications, thyroid conditions, iron deficiency, nutritional changes, and inflammatory scalp conditions can all contribute to hair or scalp concerns. If you’re experiencing sudden or patchy loss, a painful or inflamed scalp, or persistent significant shedding, get assessed by your GP or a dermatologist.

Our approach at Precision Skin

The approach we take at Precision Skin is to look at the bigger picture first and consider all aspects: when the changes began, the pattern of shedding or thinning, scalp symptoms, medical history, medications, and nutrition. We can then talk through suitable scalp-care options, what the evidence does and does not tell us, and when a medical referral is the best next step.

In-clinic options

Our advanced treatments can support natural hair growth and improve scalp health, offering options for exosome therapy, plasma therapy with biotin, or a customised combination for early hair thinning or general scalp improvement.

  • Exosome Therapy: This treatment uses Dermoaroma Purasome Exosomes, which contain natural growth factors to stimulate hair growth and scalp health. Applied with dermal needling, exosomes penetrate deeply into the scalp, enhancing skin healing, activating hair follicles, and promoting the body’s natural repair processes for stronger, healthier hair.

  • Plasma Therapy with Biotin: Plasma therapy combines growth factors from your own blood with biotin, a nutrient essential for hair strength and scalp vitality. This blend is injected into multiple scalp areas, working to thicken hair, revitalise dormant follicles, and improve overall scalp health with minimal downtime.

At-home scalp care: TruDermal Regen Serum

Precision Skin offers some home care products that may help with scalp and hair thinning issues. TruDermal Regen Serum is a lightweight, fast-absorbing leave-in cosmetic scalp serum. It is powered by GHK copper peptide, designed to revitalise your scalp and strengthen hair at the source. This fast-absorbing formula works to strengthen follicles and reduces shedding, improve scalp health with anti-inflammatory and antioxidant support, and enhance microcirculation, increasing the delivery of oxygen and nutrients.

At-home LED: TruDermal Halo Hair & Scalp Cap

The TruDermal Halo is a wearable LED cap designed for home scalp use.  LED hair growth cap, specifically designed to enhance your hair restoration journey right from the comfort of your own home. This innovative device uses advanced 660nm red light therapy to stimulate hair follicles, significantly reducing shedding and promoting thicker, healthier-looking hair growth. With its hands-free design, the LED hair growth cap offers a convenient solution for anyone seeking an effective method of hair restoration.

The manufacturer’s suggested routine is 10 minutes every other day, initially over 16 weeks. The scalp and hair should be clean and dry, without products applied before the session; Regen Serum can be applied afterwards. Halo is not appropriate for everyone, including people with certain photosensitivity conditions or photosensitising medications, and the manufacturer advises against use during pregnancy or breastfeeding. If in doubt, Kath can answer any questions about whether these products are right for you.

Small things that matter at home

As part of your normal routine, choose a gentle shampoo suited to your scalp, avoid excessive heat and harsh scrubbing, and pay attention to adequate dietary protein and overall nutrition. Persistent redness, flaking or irritation deserves assessment rather than repeated product changes. And remember that hair-growth cycles are slow: no single serum, device or procedure is a substitute for understanding the underlying cause.
