Skin Concern: Pigmentation
Your skin looks uneven, no matter what you use.
Pigmentation can be frustrating, especially when it keeps returning. It’s also one of the most misunderstood skin concerns.
Why this happens
Pigmentation isn’t just surface-level. It’s your skin responding to triggers like UV exposure, heat, hormones, and inflammation, often built up over time.
Once pigment-producing cells are activated, they can remain overactive, which is why pigment often returns without the right approach.
You might notice
- Uneven skin tone or patchy areas
- Dark spots that linger long after breakouts
- Pigment that worsens in summer
- Skin that never quite looks clear or bright
You might be wondering…
- “Why does it keep coming back?”
- “Is laser the best option for me?”
- “Can I treat this safely without making it worse?”
Our Approach
We treat pigmentation gently and strategically.
The focus is on calming the skin, regulating pigment production, and strengthening the skin barrier, not aggressively stripping it. Consistency is key here, not intensity.
Your plan may include
- MeLine or Cosmelan depigmentation treatments
- Dermal needling with targeted pigment solutions
- Chemical peels to support renewal
- Clinical skincare to control and maintain results
Results
Clearer, brighter, more even skin with long-term control, not just short-term results.
Client Results
This client came to us with longstanding, stubborn melasma that had worsened during menopause. Prior to visiting Precision Skin, she had already tried a number of treatments including hydroquinone, retinol, Pico Laser and supplements under the care of a Dermatologist.
Her treatment journey with us began with 6 months ago, alongside a prescribed homecare programme to help regulate pigment production and support long-term improvement. We also performed 3 dermal needling treatments to further target and break up deeper pigmentation.
While her journey is still ongoing, the improvement so far has been significant. Melasma is a progressive condition that requires patience and consistency, but we’ve already achieved noticeable lightening of the pigment, making it much easier for her to confidently cover with makeup while continuing treatment.
General Disclaimer: Treatment suitability, outcomes, downtime, and maintenance requirements vary between individuals. A consultation is recommended to determine the most appropriate approach for your concerns, skin, and goals.
Frequently Asked Questions
Pigmentation can often be significantly improved, however ongoing management and sun protection are essential to maintain results.
Pigmentation can be caused by sun exposure, hormonal changes, acne scarring, inflammation, ageing, or genetics.
Pigmentation is often a long-term condition rather than a quick fix. I often describe it like rust, if you’reprone to it, it tends to keep returning without ongoing management. UVexposure, heat, hormones, inflammation, and even skin irritation can reactivate pigment cells, which is why ongoing maintenance and daily SPF are so important. For some pigment-prone clients, excessive heat exposure such as hot yoga or intense exercise may also contribute.
The best treatment depends on the type of pigmentation and what’s driving it. Some pigment responds well to topical skincare, while other cases may benefit from treatments such as MeLine, chemical peels, microneedling, or laser. Homecare and consistency are incredibly important if you want to maintain results long term.
Even small amounts of UV exposure can reactivate pigment production. Consistent daily SPF is one of the most important parts of managing pigmentation long term, alongside active skincare designed to help regulate pigment production.
Absolutely. Pregnancy, menopause, contraceptives, and hormonal fluctuations can all contribute to pigmentation changes. Certain medications may also increase pigment sensitivity in some people.
