My Pigmentation Journey: What I Tried, What Went Wrong, and What Finally Worked

My Pigmentation Journey: What I Tried, What Went Wrong, and What Finally Worked

This Blog is written by one of Precision Skin's MeLine patients, Ketaki.

I want to start by saying something I don't think gets said enough in the world of aesthetics and skin treatments:

Sometimes it takes more than one attempt. And that's okay.

I'm sharing my own experience with pigmentation treatment, not as a clinician, not as someone with a flawless result to show off, but as a person who struggled with something for years, tried to fix it, had a setback, kept going, and came out the other side genuinely happy with my skin for the first time in a long time.

If you're dealing with pigmentation and wondering whether anything can actually help, this one's for you.

The Spot That Wouldn't Budge

I've had a pigmentation mark on my upper left cheek, just under my eye, for as long as I can remember. Over the years it became more pronounced; more visible, harder to cover, and honestly something I thought about more than I'd like to admit.

I wore foundation or concealer every single day. Not because I wanted to, but because I felt I had to. The mark had become one of those things that quietly affects your confidence in ways you don't fully acknowledge until it's gone.

I'd tried various things over the years, brightening serums, miracle creams, the usual recommendations, and while good skincare and SPF kept things from getting dramatically worse, nothing actually shifted the mark. It was stubborn in the truest sense of the word.

Finding the Right Treatment

When I heard that Kath at Precision Skin offered advanced pigmentation treatments, specifically Cosmelan and MeLine, two protocols I'd researched and respected, I decided to explore further.

What I appreciated immediately was how straightforward Kath was. She explained that she treats pigmentation regularly, has seen great results across a wide range of skin types and concerns, and was confident we had options worth trying. She wasn't making promises, she was sharing experience.

After assessing my skin and the nature of the mark, we decided to begin with a MeLine treatment. MeLine is a professional depigmentation protocol that works by targeting the melanin responsible for the pigmentation, essentially interrupting the process that causes the mark to appear and helping the skin renew itself through a controlled healing process. The MeLine Spot protocol typically involves two treatments, four weeks apart, alongside targeted homecare. Ideally, the homecare begins at least two weeks before the first peel and continues for up to 60 days afterwards or longer for ongoing results.

What the Treatment Involved

Leading up to the treatmentThe treatment itself was more straightforward than I expected and took less than half an hour. Kath applied the MeLine solution directly to the pigmented area, working it into the skin for around 30 seconds. She then applied a protective cream over the top, which I left on for about an hour before washing it off.

From there, the skin begins its natural healing process. A scab typically forms over the treated area, much like a small wound healing. As this gradually dries and flakes away, fresh, renewed skin is revealed underneath. It’s important to let this shedding happen naturally rather than picking at the skin, while the recommended homecare products support the process and ongoing results.

When It Didn't Go to Plan

I have to be honest here because I think the honest version of this story is more useful than the tidy one.

My first result was not what either of us had hoped for. Something in my healing process didn't unfold the way it typically does, and rather than the mark fading, there was some rebound and the pigmentation came back darker than before.

There was a moment where I genuinely questioned whether I'd made the right decision, and perhaps more significantly whether treatments like this simply didn't work on skin like mine. I have olive, ethnic skin, and pigmentation can behave differently depending on skin type and tone. That thought crossed my mind more than once.

What kept me from writing it off entirely was Kath.

Why I Went Back

Kath's response to the setback was exactly what you'd want from a practitioner: calm, considered, and grounded in experience. She wasn't deterred by the result. She explained what she believed had happened, why it was an anomaly rather than a failure of the treatment itself, and why she was confident a second session approached slightly differently in terms of aftercare would deliver a different outcome.

She had nothing to gain from pushing me toward a second treatment if she didn't believe in it. Her willingness to continue, and to do so with genuine conviction, meant more to me than any marketing claim ever could.

I decided to trust her. And I'm so glad I did.

The Second Treatment and What Changed

For the second session, I did everything differently in the aftermath. I followed Kath's aftercare instructions to the letter, protecting the area from sun exposure absolutely vigilantly, letting the skin heal slowly and completely without interference, and being patient in a way I hadn't been quite disciplined enough about the first time.

The healing process ran its course. And the mark faded.

I watched it closely for weeks afterward, half expecting it to return. It didn't. And as the weeks passed, I noticed something I hadn't anticipated. The MeLine homecare product Kath had recommended, a product called Restore, which I applied every day, wasn't just maintaining the treated area. It was genuinely improving the quality of my skin overall.

Where I Am Now

The mark is gone. My skin is clearer than it has been in years, possibly ever.

And here is the thing I find genuinely hard to believe when I say it: I barely wear foundation anymore. I, who used to feel completely unable to leave the house without it, now go most days with very little on my skin and feel completely fine about it.

That's not a small thing. That's years of quiet self-consciousness lifted.

What I Want You to Know If You're Considering Treatment

A few things I'd pass on from my experience:

Pigmentation can be treated, even stubborn, long-standing marks. Mine had been there for years and responded to treatment. Don't assume that because something has been there a long time it's permanent.

First results aren't always final results. My experience required two sessions, and the outcome was completely different the second time. If I had stopped after the first, I would have walked away with a worse result than when I started. Persistence, guided by an experienced practitioner matters.

Aftercare is not optional. The difference between my first and second result came down significantly to how rigorously I followed the post-treatment instructions. Sun protection in particular is not negotiable after pigmentation treatment.

Trust the practitioner, not just the protocol. Kath's knowledge, her calm certainty in the face of an unexpected result, and her genuine care for my outcome made the difference. A treatment is only as good as the person delivering it.

A Note on Ethnic Skin and Pigmentation

I want to address this directly because it was a real concern for me mid-journey.

Pigmentation in darker and olive skin tones can behave differently than in lighter skin and it's a legitimate question to raise with any practitioner you're considering. Kath works with a wide range of skin types and understood the nuances involved. If you have similar concerns, ask those questions directly at your consultation. The right practitioner will have answers, not reassurances.

Ready to Have the Conversation?

If pigmentation has been something you've lived with and wondered whether anything can be done, I'd encourage you to book a consultation with Kath and find out, especially in cooler months as this is the perfect time for treatment.

She's knowledgeable, experienced, genuinely invested in the outcome, and honest about what to expect. In my experience, that combination is rarer than it should be.
